Practical guide · Search topic: how to choose website analytics
How to choose website analytics for your site
Choose an analytics tool by the decisions it helps you make. Start with your actual questions—traffic sources, content performance, leads, ecommerce revenue or product journeys—then identify the least complex system that can answer them.
What the query can—and cannot—measure
Compare data collection, identifier lifespan, privacy controls, reporting depth, exports, API access, history migration, site limits and pricing at your expected traffic. A small privacy-first product may be a poor fit for multi-platform advertising attribution; a complex suite may be unnecessary for a single brochure site.
A practical way to do it
Run a short parallel test if you need to compare numbers, but document the definitions and avoid expecting exact equality. Make a list of must-haves and deal-breakers before choosing a vendor.
A useful checklist
- Write down your top three reporting decisions.
- Compare data model and privacy, not only price.
- Check migration, limits, support and export options.
Limits to keep in mind
No tool is best for every use case. Verify current terms and test the workflow your team will actually use.
Questions

Only if the features support a real need and the team can maintain them.
Can I compare prices by headline monthly fee?
Compare pageview/event limits, sites, retention, currency and required add-ons.
