Daily unique visitors: how to read the metric

A daily unique visitor count deduplicates visits within a day according to a product’s identifier rules. It does not necessarily identify the same person across multiple days, and its definition can differ from another analytics tool.

What the query can—and cannot—measure

Ask what signals produce the identifier, when it resets, and whether the value is shared across sites. A daily-salted hash, for example, can support same-day counts while preventing the same identifier from being joined across days. Summing daily uniques across a month therefore is not a monthly unique-person count.

A practical way to do it

When comparing products, align the date range and visitor definition. Explain the difference between daily uniques, monthly deduplicated users, sessions and pageviews in reports so stakeholders do not compare unlike metrics.

A useful checklist

  • Read the provider’s visitor definition.
  • Check the identifier lifespan and reset boundary.
  • Label daily sums clearly when reporting multi-day totals.

Limits to keep in mind

Visitor counts are estimates shaped by blockers, bot filters, consent signals and identifier methods; they are not a census of people.

Questions

Are monthly visitors the sum of daily visitors?

Not necessarily; daily uniques can count the same person on multiple days.

Why do tools report different visitors?

They may use different identifiers, filters, time zones and consent settings.
