A practical guide
Website analytics without cookies: what to check
Analytics can count traffic without writing an identifier to a visitor’s browser. But “no cookies” does not tell you everything: some tools create temporary server-side identifiers, and every request still carries network information. Check the complete data flow and the rules where your site operates.
When quietstats may fit
quietstats sets no analytics cookies and does not use browser storage. For same-day visitor counts, it computes a one-way hash from a random daily salt, site ID, IP address and user agent. The raw IP address and user agent are used in memory, never stored, and the salt is deleted after the day.
- Visitor identifiers cannot be linked across days because the daily salt is removed.
- The default snippet honours Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control.
- Reports are aggregate; the dashboard does not expose visitor-level timelines or cross-site profiles.
When website analytics without cookies may fit
When comparing cookie-free tools, look beyond the browser. Ask whether a persistent identifier or fingerprint is used, how raw network data is handled, what fields are retained, and whether features such as session replay or user IDs change the collection.
- No cookies is not the same as no data processing or no personal data.
- A server-side daily hash and a random browser ID have different privacy properties and useful metrics.
- Consent, transparency and opt-out duties depend on the product configuration, purpose and jurisdiction.
The trade-off to understand
A daily rotating identifier cannot measure returning visitors across multiple days. quietstats’ visitor totals are daily uniques, so a multi-day total adds each day’s unique count rather than deduplicating a person across the whole range.
Before you change tools
If your current tool uses cookies or persistent IDs, record the change date and explain it in your privacy notice. Expect differences in totals after changing tools; bot filtering, browser blocking and visitor definitions also affect counts.
Questions to ask
Does no-cookie analytics mean no cookie banner is needed?
Not by itself. The UK PECR statistical-purposes exception has conditions, and other tags or embeds may still use storage technologies. Get advice for your situation.
Can analytics count unique visitors without a cookie?
Yes. quietstats uses a temporary, daily-salted hash processed on the server. It cannot link the same visitor across days.
Does quietstats store IP addresses?
No. The collector uses the request IP in memory to derive a daily hash and country; it does not write the raw IP to the analytics database.
