Entry and exit pages

Where visits start and where they end, so you know which pages pull people in and which ones lose them.

What it does

Two ranked lists: the first page of each visit and the last page of each visit.

Why it matters

Your homepage is rarely the front door. Entry pages show the real front doors; exit pages show where people give up or finish.

How to use it

  1. Find Entry pages and Exit pages on your dashboard.
  2. Compare the two lists: pages high in both may be losing people.
  3. Open Exit pages and next steps to see where everyone else went.

How it works

How visits, bounces and duration are worked outOne visitor views pages at 09:00, 09:06, 09:20 and 10:15. The first three are under 30 minutes apart, so they are one visit of 3 pages lasting 20 minutes. The 10:15 view comes 55 minutes later, so it starts a second visit, which is a bounce.09:0009:0609:2010:15Visit 1: 3 pagesVisit 255 min gapVisit 1: 3 pageviews, duration 20 min (first to last view).Visit 2: 1 pageview, so it is a bounce (0 s duration).Same daily visitor code, so 1 visitor and 2 visits today.
A new visit starts after a 30-minute gap. Duration runs from the first to the last pageview, so a one-page visit counts as 0 seconds. Example times, not real data.

Questions

Is a high exit count bad?

Not always. A thank-you page should be an exit. Compare exits with views using the exit rate.
