AI traffic analytics: measure visits from answer engines
AI traffic analytics answers a specific question: which visits reached your website from an AI assistant, and what happened after the click? It is useful alongside search analytics, but it is not a measure of every answer where your brand appeared.
What the query can—and cannot—measure
Keep three signals separate: referral visits from people, crawler requests made by bots, and brand mentions or citations inside AI answers. A web analytics tracker sees only visits that reach a page and retain a usable source signal. It cannot reveal prompts, unclicked recommendations, or every visit whose referrer was removed.
A practical way to do it
Start with a date range and a list of source domains your analytics tool recognises. Compare assistant-attributed visitors, landing pages, engagement or goals with the same site-wide baseline. Keep the platform, landing page and date visible; a total without those dimensions can hide one anomalous link or test visit.
A useful checklist
- List the AI source names your tool actually records.
- Review landing pages and downstream goals for each source.
- Compare periods only after checking sample size and tracking changes.
Limits to keep in mind
Referrer reporting is a lower bound on attributable clicks, not a complete measure of AI influence. Treat small counts as examples, not a trend.
Questions
Does AI traffic analytics show every AI recommendation?
No. It records attributable visits, not mentions that receive no click.
Can it show which prompt caused a visit?
Ordinary referral analytics does not provide the user’s prompt.
