What it does

An Authors and categories card on your dashboard: visitors, views and average engaged time for each writer, section and tag, side by side, for any date range.

Why it matters

A blog or news site is planned by writer and topic, not by URL. Seeing that one author or one category brings most readers tells you what to write next.

How to use it

  1. Open your dashboard and find Authors and categories. Copy the labels.js line from How to set it up.
  2. Add it next to your quietstats tag on every page. Pages need an author meta tag, article:section / article:tag, or data-qs-author / data-qs-category.
  3. Visit a labelled page once; from then on the card groups your pageviews by author, category and tag.
HTML
<script data-host="https://quietstats.co.uk" data-site="YOUR_SITE_ID" data-dnt="true" src="https://quietstats.co.uk/js/labels.js" async defer></script>

Replace YOUR_SITE_ID with the ID shown on your site’s Manage page.

How it works

How author and category reports work1. A page loads with labels.js. It reads the page’s own author, section and up to 3 tags (meta tags or data-qs-*). 2. No labels on the page: nothing is sent. Otherwise one small beacon with the labels and the page address. (otherwise: Nothing about the visitor) 3. The collector checks the site and origin, then upserts one row for that page; unchanged labels write nothing. (otherwise: 0 rows on a repeat) 4. The dashboard joins your existing pageviews to the page labels: visitors, views and avg. engaged time per label. 5. Authors, Categories and Tags tables, top 8 each, on the Authors and categories card.1A page loads with labels.js.It reads the page’s ownauthor, section and up to 3tags (meta tags or data-qs-*).2No labels on the page: nothingis sent. From the labels.js code. 1 read per dashboard view, a write only when a page’s labels change, core script unchanged.

Questions

Does WordPress already have these tags?

Most themes and SEO plugins (such as Yoast) add the author meta tag and article:section / article:tag. If yours does not, add data-qs-author or data-qs-category to any element.

Is an author’s name personal data?

It is the name you publish on the page. quietstats stores it as a label for the page, never anything about readers.

What if a page has no labels?

Nothing is sent for that page, and it is simply left out of the card.
