What it does

A Display preferences card on your dashboard: the share of page views from browsers set to dark mode, reduced motion, data saving, more contrast or forced colours.

Why it matters

If a third of your readers use dark mode, your dark theme deserves as much care as the light one. If people ask for less motion or data, heavy animations and autoplaying video are working against them. Design for how people actually browse.

How to use it

  1. Add the prefs.js add-on next to your quietstats tag (the snippet is on the card and the feature page).
  2. Open your dashboard. Display preferences shows the share of page views from browsers set to each preference.
  3. Use it to decide where to check dark-mode contrast, cut motion or lighten pages.
HTML
<script data-host="https://quietstats.co.uk" data-site="YOUR_SITE_ID" data-dnt="true" src="https://quietstats.co.uk/js/prefs.js" async defer></script>

Replace YOUR_SITE_ID with the ID shown on your site’s Manage page.

How it works

How display preferences are counted1. A page loads. prefs.js reads 5 yes/no browser settings (dark mode, reduced motion, data saver, contrast, forced colours). 2. One beacon to /api/prefs. Bots, Do Not Track and other sites are refused. (otherwise: No visitor ID) 3. Each yes is added to its own daily total in one row per site per day. (otherwise: Never stored together) 4. The dashboard reads the totals for the range (1 read). 5. Display preferences card: each as a share of page views.1A page loads. prefs.js reads 5yes/no browser settings (darkmode, reduced motion, datasaver, contrast, forcedcolours).2One beacon to /api/prefs.Bots, Do Not Track and othersites are refused. No visitor ID3Each yes is added to its owndaily total in one row persite per day.Never storedtogether4The dashboard reads the totalsfor the range (1 read).5Display preferences card: eachas a share of page views.
From tracker.prefs.src.js, prefs.js and migration 0045. 1 row written per page load with the add-on.

Questions

Can this be used to fingerprint visitors?

No. Each preference is added to a separate daily total the moment it arrives. No combination of settings is kept, and there is no visitor ID, page or time with it.

Why measure dark mode?

It tells you how many people see your dark theme, so you know where to check contrast and images first.

Does it respect Do Not Track?

Yes, with data-dnt="true" the add-on does nothing for browsers that send Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, and the collector skips them too.
