Shopify website analytics: compare built-in reports and external tools

Shopify provides reports and analytics for store activity. An external website analytics tool can add other views, but it should complement rather than silently replace Shopify’s order, product and sales records.

What the query can—and cannot—measure

Decide whether you need storefront acquisition, product and order reporting, content traffic or privacy-conscious site visits. Check how each system defines sessions, sales and attribution, and avoid assuming totals will match. If adding a script, follow Shopify’s current theme or app guidance and test it after theme updates.

A practical way to do it

Keep commerce truth in the system that records orders, then use site analytics for the questions it supports. Reconcile date, currency, timezone, consent and channel definitions before comparing reports.

A useful checklist

  • Start with the store question and built-in Shopify report.
  • Add external tracking only for a distinct need.
  • Test installation and compare definitions before reporting.

Limits to keep in mind

Do not claim revenue attribution from a traffic-only tool unless a verified order integration exists.
