Practical guide · Search topic: measure email campaign traffic website
Measure email campaign traffic on your website
Email platforms often rewrite links and can obscure the original referrer. UTM parameters help identify a campaign you control, so source, medium and campaign should be consistent across the send.
What the query can—and cannot—measure
Use a broad source such as the newsletter provider or campaign programme, medium `email`, and a unique campaign label. Do not put recipient identifiers in URLs. Check whether the email platform adds its own tracking parameters and whether your landing page redirects preserve UTMs.
A practical way to do it
After sending, review sessions, landing pages and outcomes for the same date range. Compare sends only when campaign goals, audience and landing-page intent are reasonably similar.
A useful checklist
- Choose a repeatable source/medium convention.
- Use a distinct campaign name for each send.
- Test links and preserve tags through redirects.
Limits to keep in mind
UTM visits indicate tagged clicks, not opens; email privacy features make open rates an unreliable proxy for site visits.
Questions
Are email opens website visits?
No; opens and site sessions are different measurements.
Can I track individual recipients with UTMs?
Avoid personal identifiers in URLs; use privacy-appropriate email reporting instead.
