Practical guide · Search topic: track Gemini AI referral traffic

How to track Gemini referral traffic to a website

Gemini referral analytics can show visits whose source is recorded as a Google Gemini-related referrer. The first step is to inspect what the analytics property actually received rather than assume every Google-originated visit came from Gemini.

What the query can—and cannot—measure

Google search clicks and Gemini or AI-feature clicks can share broad Google source labels. In GA4, use the traffic-source dimensions and landing-page report together; in other tools, review the raw referrer where available. Search Console reports Google Search performance, not a universal label for every AI product interaction.

A practical way to do it

Keep Gemini referrals distinct only when your source data supports that distinction. If it does not, report the broader Google source and explain the limit. Avoid claiming that a change in Google traffic proves more or fewer Gemini citations.

A useful checklist

  • Inspect raw source and medium values before grouping.
  • Use landing pages to understand the destination content.
  • Keep organic search and identifiable assistant referrers separate.

Limits to keep in mind

Google-origin traffic may not identify the product surface. A referral report cannot reliably separate all Gemini answers from other Google experiences.

Questions

Can analytics identify every Gemini click?

Not necessarily; the source can be missing or reported as a broader Google value.

Does Search Console show Gemini citations?

Search Console reports Google Search performance metrics; it is not a complete AI citation tracker.
