Track newsletter traffic with UTM parameters
UTM parameters label links you control so analytics can group visits by source, medium and campaign. For a newsletter, consistent labels make it easier to compare sends and landing pages over time.
What the query can—and cannot—measure
Choose a stable source such as `newsletter`, a medium such as `email`, and a campaign name that identifies the send without personal data. Avoid putting recipient names, email addresses or other personal information in URLs. Google notes that campaign parameters are reported in specific acquisition dimensions and may not appear in every page-path field.
A practical way to do it
Build links with a shared naming convention, test one URL before sending, and inspect the campaign report after visits arrive. Keep the landing path separate from the campaign tag when reviewing content performance.
A useful checklist
- Use lowercase, stable source and medium values.
- Keep names free of personal information.
- Test tagged links and inspect campaign dimensions.
Limits to keep in mind
UTMs can be stripped by redirects, privacy tools or link tracking; they do not measure people who never click.
Questions
Should every newsletter link have the same campaign?
Use the same campaign for one send and a distinct name for each send or campaign.
Should I include email addresses in UTMs?
No; URLs can be logged and shared.
