Spike and drop markers and alerts

The visitors chart marks unusual days (▲ spike, ▼ drop), and a big drop sends an alert suggesting you check the script is still installed.

What it does

Markers on the chart, an Unusual days list under it, and spike and drop alerts in your Alerts inbox.

Why it matters

A spike tells you something worked. A sudden drop is often a broken install, and the sooner you know the less data you lose.

How to use it

  1. Look for ▲ and ▼ on your visitors chart and the Unusual days list under it.
  2. Spike and drop alerts arrive in your Alerts inbox with the top source and landing page.
  3. Change the minimum visitors, or switch drops off, on the Alerts page.

How it works

How the chart marks unusual days1. The chart already has your daily visitors and the period before. No extra reads or tracking. 2. Each day is compared with the median of up to 28 earlier days (it needs at least 7 days with visits). 3. ▲ Spike: at least 2.5 × the median and at least the site’s minimum visitors. 4. ▼ Drop: 40% or less of the median. Today can be a spike but never a drop, because it isn’t over yet. 5. Markers appear on the chart with an Unusual days list underneath.1The chart already has your daily visitors and theperiod before. From the anomaly code (the dashboard and the daily alert check use the same rules).
From a traffic change to an alert1. Once a day (or when you press Check now), quietstats reads each site’s daily visitor totals. Nothing extra is tracked. 2. Spike: visitors at least 2.5 × the median of the 28 days before, and at least the site’s minimum (20 by default). 3. Drop: visitors 40% or less of that median, when the median is at least the minimum. New and very quiet sites are left out. 4. Your own rules: visitors, pageviews, bounce rate or AI visitors; above, below or down by %; yesterday or the last 7 days. 5. Each alert fires at most once per site, kind, rule and day. (otherwise: Already sent today: skipped) 6. It lands in your Alerts inbox with the top source and landing page. 7. Slack, Discord or Teams: Send test works now. Questions

Why no markers on my new site?

Detection needs at least 7 earlier days with visits, and quiet sites under the minimum are left out so one extra visitor doesn’t look like a spike.

Will I get these in Slack?

Drop alerts go to Slack, Discord or Teams once scheduled chat sending is switched on. The Alerts page says when it is.
