Source scorecards

Compare every channel, source and campaign on the quality of the visits it sends, not just how many.

What it does

A Source scorecards card with three tabs: Channels (Search, Social, AI, Email and so on), Sources (google.com, reddit.com, your newsletter) and Campaigns (your utm_campaign tags). Each row shows visits, pages per visit, bounce rate, average visit time and a Quality score, where 100 is your average visit. The best source for the range is named at the top.

Why it matters

A source that sends a hundred visitors who leave at once is worth less than one that sends twenty who read three pages. Scorecards show where to spend your time: which posts, communities and campaigns bring people who stay.

How to use it

  1. Find Source scorecards on your dashboard, below Top pages and Sources.
  2. Switch between the Channels, Sources and Campaigns tabs. The best source for the range is named at the top.
  3. Read the Quality score: 115 or more is better than your average visit, 85 or less is below it. Sources with fewer than 5 visits get no score.
  4. Click a source or campaign to filter the whole dashboard by it.

How it works

How a source scorecard is worked out1. Split pageviews into visits: more than 30 minutes without a page starts a new visit. 2. Credit each visit to the source of its first page: the referrer or UTM tags it arrived with. 3. Per channel, source and campaign: visits, pages per visit, bounce rate and average visit time. 4. Compare each with the whole site’s average visit; each ratio is capped at 3×. 5. Quality = the average of the three ratios × 100, so 100 is a typical visit. Under 5 visits: no score. 6. 115+ better than average, 86–114 about average, 85 or less below average. Questions

Why is Direct often below average?

Direct includes people who typed your address or clicked from an app that hides the referrer. Many come for one thing and leave, which is normal.

Can I score my email campaigns?

Yes. Tag links with utm_campaign (the Campaigns page builds them for you) and they appear on the Campaigns tab.
