Compare any two date ranges: example screenshot with made-up demo data
ExampleScreenshot with made-up demo data, not a real customer’s numbers.

What it is

A compare bar on the dashboard with three modes: the previous period, the same dates last year, or a custom range. The headline cards show the change, the chart overlays the other range, and a side-by-side card lists top pages and sources for both ranges with the difference.

Why it matters

Seasonal sites can’t judge December against November. Year-on-year and custom ranges show whether a change is real or just the time of year.

How it works

  1. Choose “Previous period”, “Same dates last year” or “Custom” and pick the dates.
  2. Headline numbers show ▲/▼ against the range you picked, labelled “vs last year” and so on.
  3. The side-by-side card ranks the top pages and sources in each range.
  4. Works with segments too, so you can compare mobile visitors from Google this year and last.

Set it up

Nothing to set up: it works with the standard one-line script.

HTML
<script data-host="https://quietstats.co.uk" data-dnt="true" src="https://quietstats.co.uk/js/script.js" id="YOUR_SITE_ID" async defer></script>

Privacy: what is and isn’t collected

Collected

  • Nothing new: it reads the pageviews you already have

Never collected

  • Cookies, localStorage or anything else stored on the visitor’s device
  • IP addresses or user agents (used in memory, then discarded)
  • Anything that links a visitor across days (the visitor ID resets daily)

How quietstats works, and the legal caveats →

Rows and limits

  • Each range up to 400 days
  • Rows: 0 per pageview (reads only)
  • Also in the Stats API: compare=previous, year or custom

“Rows” are database rows written, which is what our hosting is billed on. Reads are not rows written. Methodology →

How others do it

How the tools on our compare page handle this, from their own websites and help pages, checked on 21 October 2026. “Not stated” means we could not find it on the pages we checked, not that it doesn’t exist. Plans and prices change, so follow the source links. GA4, Plausible, Fathom, Umami all offer this too.

Questions

What if I have no data for last year?

The comparison shows zero for that range rather than guessing. Imported history from Plausible or GA4 counts if you have imported it.

Is it in the API?

Yes. /api/v1/aggregate accepts compare=previous, compare=year, or compare=custom with compare_from and compare_to.
